Still Driving

Since the camera kept working, so did the weather. Spring and summer eventually turned into fall and then to winter. In the winter, driving around in storms is a little different. Usually, driving while trying to chase a storm is not exactly a safe thing to do. During winter, it is quite the opposite if you go during the right time. When the snow piles up here, it forces people inside and off the road. Clearly the majority of people are in bed and off the road after midnight. With heavy snowfall, this is exaggerated grossly and the city turns into a ghost town. Generally, with 8 inches of snow, the city is put into a level 3 snow emergency. Only emergency vehicles and snow trucks are allowed on the road. Law enforcement stays off the road because their cars are rear wheel drive and are useless in the snow. Left with only snow plows and noone else on the road(unless there is an emergency), the roads are wide open 6+ inches of untouched snow. With the heat turned out and the windows slightly cracked, the tires cut through the snow and throw it into the undercarriage sounding like your tapping your hands on a really soft bed comforter. The snow absorbs all the sound so you wonder if your car is even running. With so much cloud cover and snow in the air, it may seem like there is a lot of light when there is actually very little. Everything is lit against a white background and seems much brighter than it really is. After driving around in a few snowstorms, it was more for enjoyment and practice in different driving conditions. The best drivers come are the ones that have practiced and prepared for every condition and it only comes from experience, just like anything else. With everything so peaceful and serene, it is hard to describe, even with a picture. Like driving, taking a decent picture takes time and practice in these conditions.

  1. I love how you make a snow storm feel like you really, really want to be in one! Nice writing!
